Emergency Aid for Haiti

Dear Friends –

I am sure by this time your heart has been torn by watching or reading the news of the earthquake that devastated Haiti Tuesday afternoon. This morning I sat with my three young children and mourned and prayed for the babies that no longer have mamas and the millions of people who are grieving the loss of parents, children and friends. In the midst of this sadness there are still thousands who are even now lost in the rubble or on the streets. It is estimated that three million people have been affected by the earthquake, one third of the island nation’s population. Rescuers are digging through the rubble with their bare hands in an attempt to find those who survived the 7.0 magnitude quake.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Eighty percent of the people live on less than two dollars a day. Dealing with a natural disaster of this magnitude would be difficult anywhere but it is especially devastating in Haiti, where people are acutely vulnerable because of poor infrastructure and extreme poverty. Right now thousands of people are without homes and in desperate need of medical care. My heart aches to be there to help give aid to those suffering. Although thousands of miles separate us from these people we can make a difference and bring help to people who are enduring loss.

Compassion International has been working in Haiti for more than 40 years and is partnered with 230 churches helping more than 65,000 children and their families. In response to the disaster in Haiti Compassion Intl. will be distributing food, clean water and medical supplies as well as finding temporary housing for those who lost their homes.

Although some of us cannot physically care for those who are suffering we can provide resources for those who can and together we can make a difference and bring hope to the Haitian people.
